Originally, "geek" was a derogatory term. Lately, though, there's become a sort of "Geek Pride" movement. Geeks are clearly more successful than the average person. I loosely define a geek as someone who has an extraordinary knowledge of something not mainstream. That could be a computer operating system, or it could be Harry Potter.
Perhaps you're thinking of "nerd" or "dork" which I consider to be someone without a personality. On the contrary, geeks have very strong, albeit unusual, personalities.
